Great way to go cloth July 23, 2009 Sonja H. Lange (Austin, TX United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I did more research on cloth diapers than I did on home birth - and that is saying something! These diapers are NOT cheap - which is good because you want quality if you plan to use them for 2+ years. I don't recommend these for a newborn, go with either the AIO or disposables until you get around 10-12 lbs. Our son is using these on the smallest setting, with the insert on the smallest setting and the fold in the front for the best up front absorbtion - and we haven't had any wet leaks and only one breastfeed poopy leak. We wash them in the Nellie's soap and hang dry outside...but if you don't have that option, you can dry the inserts in the dryer and just flop the cover part over your shower rod or clothes basket or whatever and they dry super fast. Our son is 2 months old and we have 20 diapers and have NEVER run out. Get a wet bag for carrying the dirty ones home when you are out and about and a hamper for at home, and you are set!
High Quality and super easy to use! July 15, 2009 A. Kats 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm new to cloth diapering, and tried several different options, including some lower cost pocket diapers. THere is a significant difference in quality between the cheapy diapers and these ones. It's well worth paying a few dollars more, these will last much longer! I am very satisfied with my purchase!
beware of the poop! September 4, 2009 R. Ochoa 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have 2 (yes 2) boys under 2! I use the same diapers for them both. My 18 month old uses the doubler and the thicker pad and has not has any problems and my 8 week old just uses the doubler.
My older sons poops have NOT LEAKED! and the clean up is gross ( plop it on the toilet and then rinse it out in the toilet with the shower head). but i am saving about $70 a month to do it. When I have a soiled diaper I put it in a plastic trash bag in a little trash can by the washer. when it is laundry time i just separate all the pads and was once on cold and once on warm and hang to dry. the sun naturally beaches out all discolored clothes. so I don't have to use bleach. so far i am very happy with them.
These are EXCELLENT... If You Own a Washer & Dryer November 30, 2009 Glen B. Goldstein (Narrowsburg, NY United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We decided that we didn't want to use disposable diapers (bad for the environment and wasteful). We know that there are good folks who swear by disposable diapers and that's fine, but it's not for us. We live in the country, so cloth diaper service is not an option.
We ordered a dozen of the Bum Genius diapers. They aren't cheap, but we think it compares well to the price of disposables in the long run, and we will pass them on to friends when our baby outgrows diapers.
We looked on eBay for these but found no bargains -- it was about the same price to buy new ones instead of used ones.
If I had to do it again I would buy more than a dozen if I could afford them. Every baby is different, and right now our daughter can plow through a dozen diapers in two or three days. It might be nice to have more so we don't have to do laundry as often. (More on that below).
The diapers consists of a waterproof outer shell that is lined. Inside is a pocket where you insert a reusable absorbent pad. We bought both styles of pad sold by Bum Genius -- the thick ones and the thinner version. Next time I would buy only the thick version (we never seem to use the thin ones), but as always your mileage may vary.
We love these -- no environmental waste, easy to put on and take off, baby seems happy with them, easy to pack for a trip or errands around town.
I would definitely recommend them if you want to go with reuseable diapers. Expensive and worth every penny.
There IS one caveat:
Cleaning the diapers is easy, but the manufacturer does recommend a special process:
o Wash them first in cold water with 1/4 of the amount of detergent you would usually use.
o Wash them again in hot water with another 1/4 of the amount of detergent you would usually use.
o Run them through the rinse cycle only of the washer, using cold water.
This is all MUCH easier than it sounds, but only because we are lucky enough to have our own washer and dryer. If we had to go to a laundromat to do this I think it would be a nightmare.
Super Easy Cloth Diapering November 6, 2009 Miles' mom 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We've been using Bumgenius since my 2 year old was 5 months and we're adding to our stock for baby #2. These are super easy to use. Velcro is just as easy to put on as sposies so even my husband can do it with ease. If properly affixed the velcro doesn't touch skin so we've had no irritation issues. I also love that the insert comes completely out for washing which makes me feel like they get a good clean. We have a couple of Thirsties and I don't like that the absorbent insert is sewn in. If you're smelling ammonia it's likely a detergent buildup issue. We use Charlie's Soap and have had no problems (also hypoallergenic/perfume and dye free so great for all baby items). I usually do two cold cycles with a hot rinse on the last cycle. Every once in a while I'll do an extra hot wash to strip the diapers. I would recommend rice paper liners which make poopy clean up a breeze. Just peel and flush. No rinsing or scraping poo off your diaper.
